Typhus is a Greek thrash/speed metal band from Athens, known for its fast-paced, aggressive sound blending old-school thrash intensity with heavy/speed metal elements. Formed in 2009 under the name Nuclear Terror, the band draws influence from thrash legends like Megadeth, Testament, and Annihilator. Its lineup features vocalist/bassist Kostas “Korg” along with guitarists Socrates Alexiou and Kostas Foukarakis, and drummer Dimitris Ginis. After honing their sound through early demos, Typhus made their recorded debut with the EP Contaminated Salvation in 2014. This five-track thrashing assault earned positive reviews in the Greek and international metal press and saw the band sharing stages with major artists like Possessed and Flotsam & Jetsam to promote their material.
In 2019, the band underwent a pivotal change, rebranding from Nuclear Terror to Typhus to mark a new chapter in their musical vision. Typhus entered the studio that year to craft their first full-length album. Their debut album Mass Produced Perfection was released in 2020 via Punishment 18 Records, featuring cover art by renowned metal artist Pär Olofsson (known for work with Exodus, Immolation, etc.). The album showcased an evolved sound, incorporating more technical and progressive elements while keeping Typhus’s razor-sharp thrash roots strong. Mass Produced Perfection garnered excellent reviews in the metal press, further establishing Typhus as a rising force in the thrash metal scene.
Renowned for their high-octane live performances, Typhus have stormed major festival stages, including an appearance at Wacken Open Air in Germany. They’ve shared bills with heavy metal icons, playing alongside the likes of Ghost and Greek legends Rotting Christ at AthensRocks Festival in 2023. Even pandemic setbacks couldn’t slow them down – the band bounced back with European tours and continued to grow their following abroad. With new material in the works and a second album on the horizon, Typhus continues to carry the flag of Greek thrash metal forward, delivering menace and energy to old and new fans alike.
